Brian Lies, Childrens’ Book author & illustrator, my friend

My friend Brian Lies has a new book out! The followup to his New York Times best selling children’s book Bats at the Beach is Bats at the Library (Houghton Mifflin ©2008)!

Brian Lies at the ALA, Summer 2008

Brian both writes and illustrates these amazing tales of a group of bats who have a whole lotta fun at night. Bats at the Library supposes what would happen if a group of bats – from older wiser ones to the little baby bats – got into a library one night and what kind of literary adventures would be in store.

The first Bats book took place on a beach not unlike the one in our town. This new adventure takes place in a library inspired by the Riverside, IL Public Library – an homage to his late father, who grew up there. Brian spent summers there and credits this amazing library for his love of arts and crafts furniture and architecture as well as a stained glass making hobby he once pursued.

I’ve seen the book, and better yet, the original artwork and his architectural drawings are amazing!

See if you can identify the classic childrens books referenced in the above illustration.

Visit Brian’s website for more information about all the other books he’s written and illustrated and for his national book tour schedule.
