It’s that time of year again! Each year, the folks at Pantone release their Color of the Year (COTY) based on trends and future forecasting across a broad range of industries from housewares and design to fashion and product marketing. They’ve just announced the Ultra Violet is the 2018 color of the year.
Now, this is not a color that everyone will be on board with. I’ve noticed that there are those who a passionate about purple and those who absolutely abhor it, with a fairly small middle ground.
I actually love this color – it’s a great color to wear and is flattering to many skin tones. I haven’t ever done an interior design project with the color purple, but perhaps I should. Let’s take a walk through some beautiful rooms that make good use of this bluish purple tone.
We have modern and moody. The purple bedding warms up an otherwise stark and foreboding space.

Colorful and fun – hallmarks of Alexander Papachristidis‘s design style. You can really see the blue undertones in this color when paired with blue fabrics.

Moody and romantic. As with the first image, this color works very well with great, but in this case, we have a romantic, chippy style that the color purple does so well.

And this shade of purple also works well when paired with teal blue.

I kind of love this take on modern romanticism.

Did you know that these vintage purple glass bottles and window panes we sometimes see in old buildings actually started off as clear? Manganese dioxide was added to glass to bleach it, but over time, the sun’s UV raised turned them purple. So cool, no?

And a little musical tribute to the Prince of purple himself!
Could you surround yourself with purple?
I’m a purple fan Linda. I don’t have loads of it in my wardrobe but I do wear it and our master bedroom has had three revamps of purple. I’m on board for Ultra Violet.
Hi Jennifer!
I’m also a fab of purple Linda and feel even more motivated to present it as a color option to clients who traditionally lean towards reds and blues. It’s nice to shake things up even if it’s only accessories.
