I just love a good shingle style house and this Edgartown Property at 3 Dunes Road on Martha’s Vineyard really checks off a lot on my favorites list. It’s also the perfect property to share as we officially kick off the summer season here in New England. It’s 57 degrees here today – no one’s idea of summer!
Firstly, for those who may not know, Edgartown is on Martha’s Vineyard which is just off the coast of Cape Cod. In 1642, a group of families went off to start a colony on the island and was incorporated in 1671 as Edgar Towne, named in honor of Edgar Stuart, the son of James II of England, who died at the age of three in 1671.

The house at 3 Dunes Road sits high with great views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s sort of a rambling gambrel shingle style house – just the style I like! It’s 4700 sq. ft. but manages look integrate well into its surroundings.
I don’t golf, but I kind of love the idea of a putting green around the side of the pool. A little more elegant than a mini-golf course, I suppose.
I guess this is for bocce ball? Ether that, or a really, really big sand box.
Views for days.
Edgartown Property – The Interiors
Enter the light filled foyer which is open to the second story and beyond is the family room with doors on either side leading to a covered porch and the back yard pool area. Down the hall are two en-suite guest bedrooms. Two more rooms (den/office), a full bath and powder room are complete this level. Ascend the stairs to a stylish cook’s kitchen that looks to the dining area and screened porch. The living room is flanked by doors to the exterior decks and is grounded by a beautiful fireplace. The master ensuite, another guest bedroom ensuite, laundry room and powder room are also located on this floor. (description source via listing).
I think the walls are a very, very pale blue/gray for definition against the millwork.
I would like to point out the beautiful placement of the diamond pattern on the sisal stair runner. That was clearly custom custom cut for each step so that the pattern is centered and falls in the same place on each riser and tread. Most often you see it laid out like this below.
I usually don’t like a distinct pattern on a stair case specifically because they are never installed to match the patterns on each tread. The reason of course is the cost – there’s a lot of waste involved when matching patterns so specifically. But, this is a $5.5 Million house. It’s worth this level of detail.
This is the upper level sitting room – you can see the Gambrel roof lines. More of the diamond sisal cut into area rugs unifies the entire interior. I’m not sure if this house is staged for the sale or if it’s lived in. I guess since it’s a summer property, the clean aesthetic makes sense anyway. I love the various style light fixtures we see throughout the house.
This turret space below almost feels like being in a tree house, doesn’t it? It’s the only space where I don’t love the furnishings – they feel dark and heavy in comparison to the rest of the house. But I like the thought of sitting here with friends enjoying the ocean breezes from from all directions.
This is the lower level sitting room which is ever so slightly more casual than the upper-level space.
The dining room is on the upper level (you can see the tops of the trees outside the windows). The views would be better from the top floor of the house so the builder/architect (not noted, don’t know who they are) smartly put the most important rooms upstairs. There’s something austere and almost church-like about this dining room, isn’t there? Because of the sloped roof lines, it’s a bit of a tough space to decorate, so the clean palette really helps. Love the rope door stops!
Edgartown Property – The Kitchen
One thing I really like about this kitchen is that it’s actually kind of compact for the size of the house.
