The 2023 Newburyport PTO Kitchen & Tasting was a couple of weeks ago and as always – a lot of fun! This is a self-guided exploration of historic and charming homes in Newburyport and surrounding community, featuring complimentary tastings from exceptional restaurants, chefs, brewmasters and bakers to provide a “taste” of all that Newburyport has to offer while raising funds for Newburyport public schools.
Newburyport Kitchen 2023 – Greek Revival Kitchen
Design / Build by Joppa Design
From the tour write up: “This historic Greek Revival house built in 1846 was purchased in 2014. The original homeowner, Robert Merrill has made his presence known, according to the homeowner, but don’t let that deter you! The objective of the kitchen remodel was to create better utilization of the space by changing the layout. “
The original homeowner, Robert Merrill – hey! That’s my family! All the Merrill’s in the area are descendants of Nathaniel Merrill who emigrated from Wherstead, England to Newbury, MA in 1639. This Robert Merrill (not to be confused with my dad or brother, both Robert Merrills) was not a direct ancestor but possibly the brother or cousin of my Great-Great-Great Grandfather Moses who was born in 1804.

A lovely Greek Revival style with additions added on over the years.

The side of the house appears to be a cute little Cape Cod style.

So – I did not feel the presence of Robert Merrill – but I assume he must pay visits to the current owners periodically. Ghost on cousin!
Newburyport Kitchen 2023 – Victorian Traditional
Kitchen designed by Graf Architects
Builder: Adam Willette – MCE Construction
Interior Design: Laurie Smith – LBS Design
From the tour write up: “Built circa 1899, this gorgeous, creamy yellow home features gingerbread siding and a traditional turret adorned with glass and shells. The homeowner loves cooking and is a former caterer and a chef’s kitchen was a “must have”. Efficient flow, ample storage, and ease for multiple cooks to work were top of the list for this 2021 renovation.”

The back of this home is truly charming!

Check out some past tours here, here and here and my two favorite homes from this year here.

These are both such lovely, gracious homes! Thanks for the tour and the fun connection to your family!
Thanks Janet!
